Lab visit description:

Spiking closed loop motor control of robots with passive compliance and imprecise behaviour


Scientific methods offered to the student (any or a combination of the following):

  • Experimental work: robot construction, model calibration, evaluation of control strategies
  • Simulation models (SP10 NRP) and transfer from simulation to real world
  • Population rate based spiking neural networks: architecture, online learning (Nest/SpiNNaker)

Costs to be covered by participants Travel costs, accommodation, daily expenses, transportation, insurance, etc.
Interns can apply for a room in the Ghent University Housing facilities
Required language skills English (fluent)

Application details:

Application deadline: At least 2 months before start of lab visit for EU-citizens (longer for students who need to apply for a visa)

Please include the following information in your application:

  • PDF copy of diploma & grades listing, courses
  • Current (HBP) research group, supervisor and activities within HBP
  • Publication list
  • Motivation letter with a proposed research plan
  • Recommendation letter(s) of one or multiple HBP PIs
  • Copy of passport


Applications will be evaluated w.r.t. skills level of the student and suitability of desired activities within the lab's research plan. Writer of recommendation letter will be contacted. Upon positive initial evaluation, students will be invited for a skype interview to further assess fluency in English, interests and motivation, and skills.
